12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

希伯来书 12:1-3

仰望耶稣

12 既然有这么多见证人像云彩一般围绕着我们,我们就要放下一切重担,摆脱容易缠累我们的罪,以坚忍的心奔跑我们前面的赛程, 定睛仰望为我们的信心创始成终的耶稣。祂为了摆在前面的喜乐,就轻看羞辱,忍受了十字架的痛苦,如今已坐在上帝宝座的右边。 你们要思想忍受罪人如此顶撞的主,免得疲倦灰心。

望:to look [verb]

The Chinese character '望' is a verb with the meaning 'to look'. When broken down into its smaller composite characters (亡: death,月: moon/night,王: king), we can piece together a narrative on Jesus's crucifixion. The death (亡) of the messianic king (王) on the cross was propelled into action when Jesus was seized around midnight (月) at Gethsemane. It was because of Jesus's crucifixion, His death at the cross, that we can be reconciled to God. We look to the cross, His sacrifice, for hope (John 3:16).

希望: hope [noun]; hope [verb]

He is our hope [noun]. And we can hope [verb] because of His death and the subsequent resurrection.
